Another science one

ok.

CO = carbon monoxide
CO2 = carbon dioxide

right?

so why is O2 (as opposed to being called DIOXIDE) oxygen and O3ozone (as opposed to being called TRIOXIDE)???

is this to avoid confusion and to call things in more layman terms... or is there a really good reason for this? i have been meaning to ask this for a couple of weeks now but keep forgetting :)
